QUESTION:

I am presenting at an international conference in May and will be attending the conference for five days. Due to the distance involved, my travel to and from the conference will take two full days—one day there and one day back to Kamloops. My question: do I claim the two travel days as Professional Development or as Vacation?

–Concerned Faculty Member

ANSWER:

Dear Concerned Faculty Member,

Since the travel days are required in order for you to attend the conference, you should claim them as Professional Development. However, should you choose to arrive at the conference locale early or remain after the conference ends, those additional days should definitely be claimed as Vacation. Some faculty take advantage of a Professional Allowance-paid trip to combine PD activities with individual or family travel.

Thanks for asking TRUFA.
