TRUFA Statement regarding Situation in Wet’suwet’en Territory

The Thompson Rivers University Faculty Association (TRUFA) is committed to the full implementation of the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. TRUFA recognizes that Canada is a signatory to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and acknowledges that the Wet’suwet’en Nation has never ceded their lands to Canada. TRUFA calls on all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue to reach a negotiated settlement regarding the Wet’suwet’en Nation unceded territory.

TRUFA supports the right to protest as a foundational principle of Canadian democracy, and calls for an end to RCMP surveillance and forceful removal tactics that have led to arrests and ongoing confrontations with Wet’suwet’en land defenders.
